Yoke of Slavery

Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase inspired by the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.

For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1-6)

YOKE OF SLAVERY: Paul stated it pretty simply to the Galatians – WITH Jesus, you are free; WITHOUT Jesus, you are a slave.

So – a slave to what? The best way to answer that is to reflect on what we have when we rely on Jesus: a constant companion, comfort, a sense of peace, unconditional love, limitless mercy, a deeper self-awareness, and contentedness…to name just a few things. With Jesus, we are free in every sense of the word.

What about when Jesus is not in the picture? Then we are likely to experience: uncertainty, fear, doubt, temptation, unhealthy desire for material or “earthly” things, anxiety, white noise, and many other things that leave us feeling unsatisfied or uneasy. Without Jesus, we put on the “yoke of slavery” daily.

Paul asked the Galatians – and the question pertains to us today: How do we want to live our lives?
