Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20)
TWO OR MORE?: Is Jesus saying that we can only experience Christ when we are with other people?
Every time I watch a sunrise or sunset, I feel God’s presence. When I sit in the silence and pray, I feel God’s presence. As Elijah did in last Sunday’s first reading, I sit in silnce and hear God in a whisper.
So why is Jesus saying he will be in the midst of “two or three?”
Jesus is addressing the importance and the power of community. We bring Christ to one another. Others encounter Christ through us. Since Jesus no longer walks among us in human form, it is our job to give him flesh once again.
Jesus wants us to embrace community and to understand our obligation to bring Christ to one another.
