Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase inspired by the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“…he had John beheaded in the prison.” (Matthew 14:1-12)
WILLING TO BEAR: Today’s gospel shows what John the Baptist was willing to bear in order to carry out the worked he was called to do. He was willing to die for it and he did – beheaded at the order of Herod.
Through our baptism, we are priest, prophet, and king with Christ. That means we are called to spread the word of God just like John the Baptist.
It is very unlikely that we would be beheaded while carrying out those responsibilities.
However, it does raise the question: What are we willing to bear in order to do God’s work?
