Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase inspired by the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ Now hear the word of the LORD!” (Amos 7:10-17)
PROPHESY TO MY PEOPLE: As Christians, we are baptized priest, prophet and king. Today’s reading from Amos highlights the ‘prophet’ part of that obligation.
Perhaps your response to that might be, “Hold on! I’m no prophet!”
Amos felt the same way initially. When speaking with Amaziah, Amos said, “I was no prophet,
nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores.”
That is the way our baptismal obligation works. God does not pick and choose who shares the gospel message. It is the obligation of all the baptized.
This may calm your anxiety about taking on this role: No special skills are needed to share the gospel message. We have all had a personal experience with Christ and real-life examples of how God has worked in our life.
We just share those experiences with others and we’ll be prophets too!
