Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase inspired by the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“…make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue…” (2 Peter 1:2-7)
SUPPLEMENT YOUR FAITH: We could easily lock ourselves in a room, spend every waking moment in prayer, and maintain a beautiful, intimate relationship with God.
However, we are not merely disciples – followers – we are apostles. We are to go out; we are sent.
We are intended to not only HAVE a faith, but to LIVE our faith. That is what Peter’s letter means by “supplement your faith.”
Practically, that means we we pray AND we act compassionately toward others. It means we actively share our faith. It means we intentionally love others, or as St. Augustine said, we “will the good of others.”
Again, “…make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue…” Our faith should not be confined, but lived and shared. That is what virtue is – choosing to do the right thing, even when it is difficult.
