Deacon Rick Wagner was ordained on June 23, 2012 and currently serves his home parish of St. Pius X in Indianapolis, IN. He has been married to his wife, Carol, for 42 years and they have 4 children and 10 grandchildren.

Deacon Rick has been involved in Catholic education for 40+ years and currently serves as President of St. Theodore Guerin High School, a workshop instructor for Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, and a retreat leader.

He has also authored three books: Remember What’s Important (2011), Fifty Homilies from the Deacon’s Desk (2016), and Fifty MORE Homilies from the Deacon’s Desk (2024).

Master and Slave

Each day, I reflect upon a word or phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.

“Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.” (John 13:17)

MASTER and SLAVE: The master became a slave. God served men; our all-powerful God came to earth as man to serve us. Time and time again Christ gave his disciples an example of their own mission: to serve others. Love God by serving others; live like Jesus by humbly submitting to God’s will. This is the essence of Christianity: to live a life of humble service to all people, to be charitable.

Christ invites us to serve. Serving others is not always easy, because it means embracing humility. It was not easy for Christ either, but he had a motivation: to love and save us.

To love with a servant’s heart is a blessing. Love transforms our world; it transforms us and allows the grace of God to enter our hearts.

If our master can humble himself and take on the role of slave, can we glorify him by doing the same?
