Unfair!

Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase inspired by the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.

You say, “The Lord’s way is not fair!” Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? (Ezekiel 18:21-28)

As drivers, we read the “rules of the road” and believe them to be reasonable and just. We are careful drivers, so any rules the state wants to enforce are fine with us.

The expectations clearly stated by our workplace help maintain order and a level of professionalism. We are professionals and desire to work at a well-run company, so we support such order.

However, when the day comes that a police officer pulls us over for a traffic infraction or we are called into our supervisor’s office for violating company policy, we are outraged. The rules are arbitrary and unfair!

Through the prophet Ezekiel, God tells us we do the very same thing when it comes to our faith. We are all about the rules, God’s law, as long as things are going our way. But when we run into a conflict between God’s law and what we want to do, suddenly “The Lord’s way is not fair!”

We tell God we are His, that we will honor Him and abide by His laws. Yet we turn from Him by giving in to temptation.

Who is really being unfair?
