Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:35)
FAMILY: We often hear the members of our church community collectively referred to as our “parish family.” The same is true at the schools I’ve served – the students, staff, and parents are members of our “school family.”
The members of a parish or school community are obviously not all related, so why “family?”
A family is of one heart and mind. Family members tend to be of the same mindset and often share compatible hopes and dreams. Above all, family members love one another. Further, the love they have for one another is the love of which St. Augustine spoke: “To love is to will the good of the other.” We want what is best for family members.
I think that’s what Jesus meant when referencing his brother or sister or mother – his family. His family includes all who choose to do the will of God.
When we do God’s will, we are counted as members of His family.
